Decide what you really want in life
When the story of your life is told, what do you really want to be remembered for?
Owning a business? Come on. That’s not really it. Because when you go inside, and really think about it, you realize that your life is about something more. Something bigger. And that something – that legacy you want to leave – is your personal mission.
Think for a moment. What’s your personal mission in life?
Is it to be famous? To be President of an international enterprise? To be known for achieving great things? To constantly learn and grow? Or just to fully experience all that life has to offer?
Sure, your business can help you get it. But owning a business – by itself – is not your personal mission. And that’s the problem:
As long as your business–and not your personal mission–stays at the center of your life, you’ll never get what you really want.
The story of your life
Imagine yourself going to the funeral of a loved one. Inside the funeral parlor - or chapel - you notice the flowers, the soft organ music, the warm lighting, the golden carpeting and walls. Seventy or eighty of your friends and relatives are there. You see their faces. You feel the shared sorrow of losing, the joy of having known, that radiates from their hearts.
At the front of the room is heavy table, with a candle flickering brightly at either end. Between the candles is a casket. And inside that casket is you.
This is your funeral. All of these people have come to honor you, to express feelings of love and appreciation for your life.
As you picture this day, you hear a tape recording of your voice. It’s you - telling everyone the story of your life. What do you tell them? What do you feel?
Do you feel regret, remembering the dreams you never realized?… The times your family took a back seat to your business?… The great things you’d hoped to accomplish? Do you feel like you were led astray, as you remember the promise of your own business as the "key" to getting more out of life?
Or do you speak proudly? Retelling the great things you achieved… The mountains you climbed… The rivers you forged… The obstacles you conquered… The people you touched?
If you were to begin today, to write the script for that tape, what would it say?
